ChiaoGoo Needles: A Buying Guide

Which ChiaoGoo Knitting Needles Should I Choose?

Fixed circulars, interchangeable tips, TWIST, SPIN, Forté, QUADS, Shorties… where do you start? Choosing ChiaoGoo knitting needles becomes much easier once you narrow down what you enjoy knitting and how you like your needles to feel.

At The Little Knitting Company, we stock the complete ChiaoGoo range. Whether you’re buying your first pair or adding to a much-loved collection, here’s a practical guide to finding your starting point.

ChiaoGoo lengths are commonly described in both inches and centimetres. We’ve included both at the first mention of each length to help you recognise the size you need. Millimetres, such as 3mm or 4mm, refer to the needle diameter.

Fixed circular or interchangeable needles?

Fixed circular needles have two tips permanently attached to a cable. ChiaoGoo offers eight overall lengths across its fixed circular range, so you can choose the needle size and length to suit your project, with no components to assemble.

They’re a straightforward choice if you regularly use a particular size, want a dedicated needle for a project, or would like to try ChiaoGoo before investing in a set. Circular needles can also be used for knitting flat: simply turn your work at the end of each row.

Interchangeable needles have separate tips and cables that screw together. You can change the needle size or cable length as your projects change, provided the connections are compatible.

You don’t have to start with a complete set. Buying a pair of tips and a suitable cable lets you try the system and build your collection gradually.

Which needle tips feel right for you?

The material and shape of your needle tips affect how they feel in your hands and how readily your stitches move.

ChiaoGoo TWIST stainless steel tips have a smooth surface and tapered lace points. They may appeal if you like stitches to move freely, particularly when working increases, decreases and lace.

ChiaoGoo SPIN bamboo tips offer a warmer feel and a little more grip. Some knitters prefer this when working with slippery yarns or keeping control of their stitches.

ChiaoGoo QUADS stainless steel tips offer a different shape, with four gently flattened sides and rounded corners. If you find round needles difficult to hold comfortably, you may prefer their profile.

ChiaoGoo FORTE tips combine stainless steel points with carbon fibre shafts, offering another option if you enjoy a smooth metal point but prefer a different feel along the body of the needle.

There’s no single best choice. Your yarn, tension and the way you hold your needles all influence what feels comfortable.

Whichever tips you choose, check their connection size when selecting a cable. Choosing bamboo tips doesn’t restrict you to using clear nylon cables, you can also use compatible Red Lace or SWIV360 cables.

Which ChiaoGoo cable should I choose?

Choosing bamboo tips doesn’t mean you have to use a clear nylon SPIN cable. You can pair bamboo or stainless steel tips with compatible steel-core cables, provided the connection sizes match.

TWIST Red Lace cables have a flexible, multi-strand steel core with a smooth red nylon coating. Their memory-free construction means they don’t retain the coiled shape of their packaging.

SWIV360 silver cables combine the same type of flexible steel-core construction with a silver-coloured nylon coating and swivel connections, allowing the tips to rotate independently of the cable.

At The Little Knitting Company, we now favour SWIV360 silver cables over the clear nylon SPIN cables. They’re a useful choice if you enjoy the flexibility of Red Lace cables and would also like a swivel connection.

Remember that memory-free doesn’t mean kink-proof: steel-core cables can still be damaged if pinched or sharply bent.

Should I choose 4in or 5in tips?

Tip length affects both how the needles sit in your hands and the length of circular needle you can comfortably make.

4in (10cm) tips are useful when you need a shorter circular, including a 16in (40cm) configuration with the appropriate cable.

5in (12cm) tips give you a longer section to hold. You may prefer them for larger projects or if shorter tips feel cramped in your hands.

If you’re unsure, trying one pair before choosing a set can help you discover your preference.

What are ChiaoGoo Shorties?

Shorties use compact interchangeable tips and short cables for knitting small circumferences, such as socks and sleeves.

The principal Shorties sets are:

Set Tip lengths Needle sizes Connection
Red Shorties 2in and 3in 2–3.25mm Mini [M]
Blue Shorties 2in and 3in 3.5–5mm Small [S]
Yellow Shorties 3in 5.5–8mm Large [L]

Short tips feel different from standard-length needles. Some knitters love their compact shape; others prefer fixed circulars, double-pointed needles or magic loop. Choose the method that feels comfortable for you.

Mini, Small and Large: check the connection

These names describe the connection size, rather than the length of the tip.

Always check the marking or product description before pairing tips and cables. A particularly useful example is a 3mm TWIST tip:

- A 3in (8cm) tip has a Mini connection.
- A 4in or 5in tip has a Small connection.

The same needle diameter does not necessarily mean the same connection.

Adapters offer further options by connecting certain larger-join tips to smaller-join cables. Check the direction and compatibility carefully before buying.

Choosing your cable length

ChiaoGoo interchangeable cable lengths refer to the cable itself. Add the length of both tips to calculate the overall circular needle length.

For example:

4in tip + 8in cable + 4in tip = 16in circular needle
Metric equivalent: 10cm + 20cm + 10cm = 40cm

For conventional knitting in the round, choose an overall length that allows your stitches to sit comfortably around the needle. Magic loop uses a longer cable to work a smaller circumference.

Do you need a complete set?

Think about the needle sizes you actually use.

If most of your projects fall within a narrow range, individual tips or a smaller set may be sufficient. If you regularly move between different yarn weights and projects, a wider selection may be more useful.

Check the contents rather than relying on the set name: a Large set covers larger needle sizes, rather than simply containing more needles.
